Edinburg, Texas – Richard Gonzales, attorney and lifelong resident of
Edinburg, Texas, filed his paperwork today as a candidate for Edinburg City
Council, Place 1. This marks Gonzales’ first venture into politics, and his
candidacy for elected office in one of the fastest-growing cities in the Rio Grande
Valley represents a desire to work towards uniting a city that has become
fragmented through recent instances of divisive and polarizing politics. Gonzales’
campaign is centered around the theme of “Edinburg United,” and he is
optimistic that his strategic and unifying approach to governing will help the
community charge forward in a progressive manner.
An accomplished criminal defense and civil attorney, Gonzales is a self-
motivated, independent professional who understands the workings of city
government and is poised to make strategic decisions for the city and in the best
interests of its citizens. Gonzales has worked as legal counsel for a local city and
he is well-versed in the various legal aspects regarding city government, including
open meetings laws, procurement laws, contracts, finances, management, and
more. Gonzales’ knowledge and experience in government make him the most
qualified candidate for the position, and will foster a more transparent system of
checks and balances when considering policy decisions for Edinburg.
“Our great city of Edinburg is experiencing phenomenal growth and is constantly
being sought after by investors for economic opportunities,” said Gonzales. “As
city leaders, it is our responsibility to maximize the city’s advantage and present a
strong, unified community to attract businesses, jobs, and economic growth,”
Gonzales continued. “As we continue to grow, we also need to improve our
community from within – by addressing infrastructure needs, listening to the
needs and concerns of our citizens, and promoting a renewed sense of trust in
government,” he added.
Gonzales received his political science degree from the University of Texas – Pan
American and received his law degree from Texas Wesleyan University. After
passing the state bar, Gonzales began his career as a criminal prosecutor with the
Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office where he successfully prosecuted
hundreds of criminals, including dozens of jury trials. Gonzales opened his own
law firm after his tenure with the DA’s office, where he practices to date.
Gonzales is a former board member of the Edinburg Boys and Girls Club, and is a
member of the Hidalgo County Bar Association and the Hidalgo County Young
Lawyers Association. Gonzales lives in Edinburg, Texas and is a lifelong member
of El Buen Pastor Methodist Church in Edinburg.
Early voting for The City of Edinburg municipal elections begins October 23,
2017, and runs through November 3, 2017; Election Day is November 7, 2017.
